Summary:
The story of Luke 17:11-19 being acted out
Spontaneous Melodrama: The 10 Lepers
In a
spontaneous melodrama the teacher is reading the story and it is being acted
out. It is not rehearsed and that is what makes it fun and spontaneous!
However, the narrator should be familiar with the story so they know when to
pause and when to reread something if it is not acted out, etc. If you tell
them they are itching they have to itch their arms, if you say the town people
said.... they have to repeat what you say the way you say it or tell them to say
it.
Everything inside of ( ) are the actions your actors do as you
read the story
Cast: Jesus, train conductor, 10 lepers, Sam, Marya,
Gail, Lee, the rest of your kids are the audience and they have a part
too!
(Jesus in back of the room) And it came to pass (Jesus comes walking
toward the front of the room), as Jesus went to Jerusalem. (Train conductor
comes out) …Next stop certain then Jerusalem….All Aboard!(yells it out
2x’s)
Jesus passed through the midst of Sam, Maria, Gail and Lee (4
people needed …2 on each side of the road and train conductor leads Jesus
through the middle of them).
And as Jesus entered in a Certain Village
(The audience yells out…) .”Welcome to Certain. We certainly hope you enjoy
your stay!” There he met 10 men who were leopards (they were on all 4’s and
begin to rub up against Jesus’ legs. They licked there lips and purred loudly,
they looked at Jesus hungrily, they began to drool, and rub their bellies.)
Wait a minute…they are lepers not leopards!!!! Get up and stand before Jesus.
Now a leper is someone with a bad skin disease…their skin was flaky and
itchy… (itch your arms…) No one wanted to be around them because their disease
was contagious. (people in audience said …”Your not welcome in certain. We
certainly want you to stay out and we are certain about that!!!!”) (The men
moved to the corner of the room away from Jesus) The men lifted up their voices
and said in their best Larry the cucumber voice, (Jesus, Master, have mercy on
us!) And when Jesus saw them he began to recite the poem….10 little lepers
jumping on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head…) as Jesus was reciting
the people of certain called out…(We are certain this is not the way this story
goes. We certainly don’t remember reading this in the bible!)…with that Jesus
stopped and began to rewind…(make rewind noise) Now where were we…oh yes. The
10 lepers called out in their best sponge bob voice….(Jesus, Master, have mercy
on us). And Jesus said to them…(Go show yourself to the priest, do not pass
stop and go and do not collect $200). And it came to pass as they began to
walk towards the back of the room they were healed and they rubbed their arms
and saw they were smooth, they lifted their pant legs and showed them to the
people of certain to show them their cute socks and super clean legs)… But as
they were doing this 1 of the lepers turned around and ran back to Jesus, he
fell at his feet, he untied his shoes and then tied them….he said to Jesus in a
squeaky little voice, “Thank you Jesus”….he then coughed and cleared his throat
and said in a deep manly voice….”Thank you Jesus….you’re the man!” And Jesus
looked at the man and said, “Weren’t there 10 lepers cleansed” the people of
certainly yelled, “There certainly was!!!” And he helped the man up, and said
“Arise…go your way…for your faith hath made thee whole” and the train conductor
called out…(Next stop Your Way…all aboard)…and the leper got on the train and
rode off into the sunset ….and Jesus said, “Wasn’t that a happy ending!.” And
the people of certain said, “It Certainly was!!!” The
End
Clap!!!!Clap!!! Wait for everyone to settle down and then start
discussion:
Discussion: What excuses could the other nine have given for
not returning and thanking Jesus?
• But he told us to go to the priests -
we're only doing what he said!
• He's God, he knows I'm grateful.
• I
have so many things to do now that I can be a normal person again! I'll thank
Him later.
Do we often make excuses for not thanking God? What excuses do
men make today for not thanking God?
• I'm obeying God - so he owes me these
blessings.
• God knows my prayers before I offer them. Why should I have to
tell him?
• I'm very busy right now, I'll thank him later.
• God didn't
do that for me, it was: my hard work, nature, my friend, luck.
Let’s all
stop right now, quiet ourselves and think of some things we are thankful for.
Let’s turn these into prayers and thank the Lord. I will start…Dear Lord thank
you so much for……encourage the kids to take a turn and pray out loud.
Worship
time (let’s show Him we are thankful by worshipping him.)

Ideas for Lessons 1-4 Communion.
More ideas for Lesson 2 (b) - October 7
1. Fill a shoebaox with candy, stickers or other small ggifts and wrap it with several layers of wrapping paper. Show the package tot he chidlren adns ay, "I have a wonderul suprise for you today! Can you guess what it might be?" Inite the children to remove one layer of paper at a time until the box is unrapped. SHare the candy with the children. Say: "In the Bible story, two of JEsus' folowers get a wonderful suprise. Can you remember what that was." Talk about times when you were suprised by Jesus.
2. Before the lesson, inite a suprise guest to come in. Ask the person to dress as a familiar bible character and then stand outside the door of the room. Play a game of 20 questions with the hildren. the children can ask 20 questions that require "yes" or "no" answers. An appropriate question might be: Is the gues a cartoon character? These questions and answers will provide clues to help the children guess the identity of the suprise visitor. When the children guess correctly, the person appears. Say: "Today we had a suprise guest in our class. Whenever people eat the Lord's supper together, there is a suprise guest present, too. It's Jesus Christ is risen and alive. His Spirit is alwys with us."
3. Read the story with the children from the bible. Discuss the changes in the disciples emotions as the story unfolds. (ie: grief, suprise, confusion, etc.) Then choose three children to act out the story, exaggerating the expressions of mood and feeling as you read the story the second time. Talk about emotions you may feel when you think of Jesus being with you, or how you've felt when you forgot that Jesus was there.
4. Use some of the following questions to reflect on the story or discuss the lesson focus:
-have you ever been to a surprise party? tell us about it. what do people's faces look like when they are suprised? Show us a suprised look on your face.
-have you ever been talking to someone who has actually walked away and you found yourself talking to a complete stranger.
- how do you think Jesus' friends felt when they discovered it was Jesus with them on the road to Emmaus?
-if you met Jesus today, would you be surprised? what do you think he would say to you?
-when we share the Lord's Supper, what things remind us that Jeus is present with us?
-think about all the different places you might go in your life. Is there anwyere you could go where Jesus was not present? Read Psalm 139 together. Compare with Romans 8:38-29
-create a worship song, poem, or drawing illustrating Psalm 139
5. Make placemats with the children. Creat a speical one for Jesus. Invite the children to set a place for Jesus at their dinner table this week. This will help them remember Jesus is alive and present among us.
6. Ask the children "If you could see God, what do you think He would like?" Draw a picture of Him on a piece of paper.
7. Using examples from your own life, tell/share stories of tiems when Christ demonstrated his presence. say, "Sometimes God show us He is with us through miracles or through the lives of people around us."
8. Using invisilbe markers or white crayons on white paper, write messages " from Jesus" teaching" to each other. Give them to each other and "reveal" the message by over-writing or painting over the crayon.

Idea for the older children
talk about what it would be like to be living as a follower of Jesus during the time of Saul's persecution - how would you live, would people be able to tell if you were a Christian or not. How is that different in how Christians live today?
TRY THIS AS AN IDEA FOR A CRAFT:
Evangelism beads, which are multi-colored beads worn as a bracelet, are
often used as an aid to tell others about Jesus, and may be crafted by
older children. The bracelet often includes a black bead, to represent the
darkness of humanity's sin; a red bead, to stand for the blood Jesus shed
on the cross for humanity's redemption; a white bead, to show that those
who repent and believe in Jesus are now purified and clean; and that those
who follow Jesus Christ will join him one day is symbolized by a blue or
yellow bead, representative of heaven, or glory. This concept can be
replicated by simple booklets that use the same colors and message in
tract form
